Since things ended with Robbie, Sean has been trying to figure out his sexuality. He says he wants to be like “all the other guys,” or to try, at least. For the first time, Tully and Kate are living apart, with Tully in New York and Kate back in Seattle.

She is still rather tight-lipped and dealing with difficult emotions, but she is genuinely thankful when he gives her that. Her own marriage has run into difficulties on account of some hitherto unexplained decision of Douglas to go into politics. While the couple argues over the phone, Jenny listens in from the phone exchange and misinterprets a stray remark to mean that Joyce is a Nazi sympathizer. Next thing you know, a swastika has stained Joyce’s house and a brick shattered a window. She figures out what happened, with Spencer’s help, and confronts Jenny at the exchange, confiscating the notebook in which Jenny kept tabs on people.

It’s almost verbatim what Tully usually says to guys in a hilarious twist of fate. Kate goes on a road trip in all three decades in “On the Road,” starting with hitchhiking across town to the restaurant pictured in a photo Tully has of Cloud with her as a baby. That’s evidenced throughout the 1980s segment in this episode since Kate and Johnny can’t keep their hands off of each other, to the detriment of Kate and Tully’s friendship. Lottie’s introduction is interesting, to say the least. She runs into Kate in the bathroom and gives her a speech about how Kate is like a legend among mousy wallflowers for landing Johnny Ryan after he spent years pining for Tully. Things are getting hot and heavy between Kate and Johnny now that they’re finally together, although Kate claims they aren’t “official” yet.

But then, everyone in Great Paxford has some issue oppressing them, beyond the threat of bombings. Laura Campbell’s problem is not just palpable but audible and visible. She has been named a correspondent to adultery in the newspaper announcement of her former lover’s divorce proceedings, so pointed comments and judgmental glances now follow her everywhere. She is forced to endure the demeaning humiliation of hearing conversations turn towards honor and respectability when she enters a shop, all while the speaker refuses to look her way. Joyce is a pillar of the community, and the historical leader of the Great Paxford Women's Institute. Joyce is sophisticated and serene, and even her ex-nemesis Frances observes that she is a natural leader.

But even in the midst of all that, Pat somehow manages to get a job at the local telephone center, and Spencer’s snooty blond is her boss. Can’t see those two making a happy working pair, as the blond is also bossy and unkind. It seems Pat can’t get away from controlling situations, so she may be a commentary of sorts on women who face her situation at home. I’m rooting for her, but scared of what she’ll be put through. The cow farmer Stanley Farrow continues his hard work, and his pretty wife Steph still seems to work even harder than he does.

They should let Marah come to them and create a safe space for her. Meanwhile, Kate informs Johnny that her parents are going to be in town soon, and he proposes that she introduce him to them as her boyfriend. The problem is that Kate’s parents, Margie and Bud, don’t like Johnny. They think he used Tully and is something of a playboy. Johnny says that’s all the more reason for her to invite him for dinner, so he can prove them wrong.

But Tully is struggling with a lot right now, including the due date for the baby she never had, her annulled marriage, and the lawsuit. Not wanting to be alone, Tully picks up Cloud after her shift and asks her to come to stay with her for a while. Complicating matters, when Tully gets to work the next day, she sees Danny there.

In the house, Margie tells Sean she could have told him, and she would have supported him. And speaking of awkward family dinners, the meal between Kate’s parents, Sean, Johnny, Kate, and Marah, is just as tense as the one in the 1980s. Margie makes a comment about Kate and Johnny getting back together, and Kate has to tell her that’s not happening right now. Then Sean ends up coming out as gay at the table once Margie starts pressing him about Julia. Johnny and Sean end up coming into the room just as Kate reads the messages. All three are obviously accepting and open to the idea of Marah being part of the LGBTQ community, but they’re not sure whether they should bring it up to her or not.

When war becomes even more certain, Frances and the WI decide it is time for a community air raid shelter to be installed in case of an attack. Thus Joyce's efforts at stymieing Frances and the "new" WI, of which she strongly disapproves, are totally misdirected and the plan for the actual shelter proceeds without interference. A farming wife who comes to enthusiastically support the WI after some initial reluctance to join. Steph is very happy with her husband and only wants what is best for him; when he decides to enlist, she supports him through love rather than reason. The first episode of this series was released on 19 Sep. 2022 on Monday. Mark goes back to his apartment to fetch Eleanor’s stuff and to kill Naomi, the woman he was on a date with just days ago.

Meanwhile, Isaiah is upset and angry after Eleanor’s goodbye, and he even throws her gifts and friendship bands into the trash. In reality, Naomi also wants to believe the same thing since she is beginning to feel real feelings for Mark and has started to see Eleanor as her own daughter. The 1970 portion of this episode follows Tully and Kate at their new jobs at a local burger joint. Neither is thrilled with Lisa-Karen being their shift manager, especially since she’s mean to both of them. Kate finally confronts Lisa-Karen about her behavior, and she says it’s because Kate bailed on her the second Tully came back to town.

The coast is safer, as the village they’re in is surrounded by air bases, prime targets for enemy bombings. Frances accepts these reasons, but also seems to reflect on the coming dangers. Her estranged son has come to visit her in an attempt to salvage their relationship, which soured when she remarried and he immigrated to Canada. But he now has a five month-old daughter and is off to battle – both strong impetuses for renewing his bond with his mother. The two reconcile, then join the rest of the town, led by Sarah and Claire, as they band together to harvest Steph’s field while she rests. When Steph wakes from a long sleep, she finds all of the corn picked and threshed – the farm is saved.

I wasn’t sure about him previously, but I think he’s a fairly swell chap now. Stanley Farrow’s decision to enlist was one of my favorite storyline arcs in this episode. I admire this woman’s strength and grit more each episode.

Episode 1

Kate flies out to New York to visit her, and the two bond and lament the fact they don’t get to see each other as much anymore. Kate also thinks she’s pregnant and is upset when she realizes she’s not. It looks like Kate really wanted to have more children, but that doesn’t seem to be in the cards for her and Johnny.

For any treatment Claire wants to administer to Peter, any biopsy could be tested on her first. For Claire, Eleanor is just a lab rat for testing her procedures, and she will not think twice before sacrificing herself to save her brother’s life. In 1985, Tully, Kate, and Johnny rush to a protest to do some media coverage on it. Kate and Johnny are enjoying their romance, but she tells Tully that they are not in a “confirmed relationship” yet. Tully seems irritated that she cannot spend time with Kate, as she’s spending too much time with Johnny.
