If you want to be transported to a place outside Miami, dress in something chic and head to dinner at the new and swanky Swan, then go for cocktails upstairs at the restaurant’s Bar Bevy. The sceney spot, which is partially owned by Pharrell, draws lots of celebrities to the area and its Modern European cuisine ranges in price from two to four dollar signs.

These structures, comprising 2,364 residential units and more than 54,000 square feet of public space, will also feature office and retail amenities to enhance the urban experience. Notably, the project will incorporate distinct architectural elements like red paneling and impact Toronto’s skyline. Focusing on custom fabric development, John Elliott creates functional and modern fits that are designed to build the core of a wardrobe. Known for carefully considered choices of materials and details, this minimalistic approach to luxury draws inspiration from the city of Los Angeles where the brand is based. Miami is the second flagship store, following Melrose Avenue in West Hollywood. Pura Vida is South Florida’s go-to wellness eatery and all-day café, offering a balance of nutritious and delectable dishes, sourced using local and organic ingredients.

Like walking into luxury shops, gallery hopping in MDD could result in some pretty steep purchases if your pockets are deep enough. Instead, why not map out the local galleries, showrooms and museums within walking distance and make a point of stopping in at a handful that intrigue you. Snap some pics (of course, always ask if it’s OK first — most galleries will allow you to take photos with the flash off) and ogle the talents of artists from all over the world.

Instructors here aren’t afraid to help with adjustments and are super friendly and helpful, especially if you’re a first timer. We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.

Artists in the 2018 exhibition include classics such as Dalí as well as groundbreaking modern artists like Kathryn Andrews. Take a virtual tour with local influencer Daniela Ramirez and visit some of Miami's most photo-worthy locations. At MIRAI Design District, every space is its own, flexible in size, form, and function to support each brand’s DNA—a series of micro-experiences that add up to a compelling and striking destination for consumers and business owners. Immerse yourself in this extraordinary installation comprised of faux coral boulders sculpted into a secluded lounge. This Design District food hall (formerly named St. Roch and then Politan Row) has choices ranging from pasta and tacos to fried chicken and one of the best omakase sushi counters in the city.

It’s a great lunch spot between shopping sprees and has plenty of seating for big groups, plus a large central bar if you need a bit of liquid courage to pull the trigger on your next purchase. The area of land that is now the Design District was once a pineapple farm in a neighborhood referred to as Buena Vista. Moore, built the historic Moore Building in the 1920s for his family furniture business.

Miami’s only two Michelin-starred restaurant fittingly resides in Design District. At L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon Miami, find artfully composed, Miami-inspired contemporary French dishes (think seared scallops topped with coconut foam in a cilantro broth) in a dark and moody space. There’s an option to order à la carte, but if you can swing the price tag, go for the chef’s seasonal tasting menu. Chanel, Cartier, Creed, Hermes, Fendi, Louis Vuitton — Most of these stores have one thing in common. The first is that some used to be located in Bal Harbour Shops, a suburb near the water to the north of MDD, and then moved over to this side of town.

Trendy locals love this aesthetically pleasing, Greece-inspired shop (adjacent to the ever-packed Mandolin Aegean Bistro), which offers a selection of off-the-beaten-path labels and bespoke homewares as well as coffee from a café in the front. Mrs. Mandolin is a great choice for shoppers who feel a tad intimidated by the huge, high-fashion brands dotting the Design District. This place is a little more chill (and affordable) than your average Gucci store. Miami’s centrally located haven for luxury shopping also boasts some of the city’s best dining, art and events.

There are plenty of great Miami neighborhoods where culture, food, music and shops are unique and interesting. Sure you’ve ventured off to Little Havana, Brickell and Downtown Miami and discovered all there is to do and see in these areas. A hop, skip and jump away from Wynwood (literally, you could walk from one to the other), Design District offers something a little different.

There’s also an interactive net (goes from floor 6 up to 7) and spiral staircase (floor 7 down to 6). Many people go to the rooftop as well which offers an unexpected, stunning and unobstructed view of the neighborhood. This petite, tree-lined enclave is sort of like Wynwood’s older sister who went to a fancy art school up north and has amazing style. Pretty, manicured Design District might contain an unusually high concentration of coveted luxury shops, but it also has amazing cultural offerings—and many of them cost nothing to enjoy.

This market typically includes 90+ Makers, featuring handcrafted goods from local artists and small businesses. The ICA (as you’re more likely to hear people call it) is a shiny museum housing some magnificent exhibits of contemporary art. Here you’ll see big names alongside criminally underrated and daring artists. The three-floor museum would certainly be worth every cent of your admission if it wasn’t free. But since it cost $0 to enter, there really is no excuse for not checking it out. Madison Group, in collaboration with Rafael Viñoly Architects, has unveiled plans for four new skyscrapers in Toronto’s Midtown, marking the firm’s first venture in Canada.

The Moore Furniture Building was one of the first stores in the U.S. dedicated strictly to furniture. Greater Miami & Miami Beach is a world-class destination for arts and culture. You’ll find that Miami’s arts and culture scene is filled with an international flavor and vibrant energy that shines brighter than ever. Information desks are located throughout the neighborhood from the hours of Monday – Saturday 11 am – 8 pm, and Sunday 12 pm – 6 pm during Art Week. The nominees, which also include Pio Abad and Delaine La Bas, have all held significant exhibitions within the past year and will be featured in a group show at Tate Britain from September 25 to February 16.

Minimalist and Asian home design often uses pillows and cushions around the coffee table. This concept can be further explored to add day beds, foldable furniture, soft rugs in front of the fireplace, and low-bearing seaters.

Before you buy new furniture, see if you can repurpose something you already own. For instance, instead of splurging on nightstands, perhaps utilize mismatched chairs or floating shelves to get the job done and create a personalized bedroom design. Front yard landscaping ideas: 20 front yard ideas

'Using groups of a few different types of plants help to keep the landscape from getting too busy. Pick plants that complement each other in color and texture. Don't forget to use evergreens, grasses, trees, and shrubs with structure for winter interest,' recommends Dawn James. A flowering tree provides wonderful curb appeal and is delightfully welcoming for those few weeks in spring when it’s in bloom. Flowering varieties provide color and fragrance and, because they tend to be smaller trees, they usually don’t block the house.

How to Landscape Front Yards and Entryways to Maximize Curb Appeal

Whether you're a designer who just finished an amazing project or a homeowner who takes great pride in their garden, we'd love to see it! Consider these other creative front yard landscaping ideas. ”Your house is a large object that will block the sun for part of every day,” notes Winslow. If your house faces north, the front yard is never going to get great light. If it faces east or west, it may get searing sun for part of the day and then no sun for the remainder. Make your plant selections with your house’s orientation in mind.

Build Retaining Wall Gardens

When you have a small or non-existent yard, you have to think creatively. Add a wooden trellis and drape it with climbing flowers like roses or flowering bushes like wisteria. This will add some visual appeal to your home and give you some privacy.

How can I make my front yard look amazing?

Full sun will lend itself to growing warm-season annuals or vegetables, while shade will help keep a seating area cooler in summer. If you lack garden space in front of your home, you can still make the space welcoming and pretty. Potted plants and flowers under the windows and on the steps add greenery to what otherwise would be a bare entrance. This will add some much-needed liveliness and a pop of color. We've gathered a lot of front yard landscaping ideas here, suitable for a variety of experience levels, beginner to expert. Install a small water feature, such as a fish pond or a glazed pot with a circulating pump, and let the overflow splash into a bed of attractive rocks.

If you're considering creating your own Mediterranean oasis in your front yard, be sure you know how to create a Mediterranean garden before you start. There are many ways to create impact with clever front yard ideas, from using eye-catching materials, to creating a smart structure with pathways or planting. You can also take inspiration from your backyard ideas to tie both outdoor spaces together. We all don't have space for a garden, but a mailbox can be used to display shrubs, colorful flowers and climbing vines to showcase your taste.

A technique called xeriscaping entails using drought resistant grass mixes, native plants and drought-resistant plants to keep your landscape thriving with little water. Raised planting beds are often used instead of or together with foundation plantings. Build bottomless planting beds deep enough to provide ample soil for root growth and to ensure the bedding soil mixes with the soil below.

Focusing on design elements that add depth, color, and structure can transform a modest space into a captivating entrance. Here are some innovative ideas for making the most of your small garden design, turning limitations into assets. Updating the hard-landscaping in your front yard is another great way to make it more attractive. 'Unite your home with your front yard by bringing nature right to your doorstep! Weave your porch balcony in garlands, frame your door with flowers and turn your steps into podiums for your plants. This will create an effortless transition from lawn to lounge and add an inviting presence when guests visit your home,' recommends Volodymyr Barabakh, co-founder of Structural Beam.

Frame With Large Shrubs

A framed view is often much more inviting than an open view. Consider the simple landscaping idea of planting taller trees on either side of your house and one (or more) behind it. Trees give the yard and house a look of permanence and soften the second story or roofline against the sky.

Adding flower beds around the perimeters or under windows breaks up the monotony of traditional landscaping and makes a bold statement. You can always use large pots with a variety of brightly colored annuals and plant low-maintenance perennials around evergreen shrubs. Flowering plants are a great way to make your front yard more attractive.

front landscape design

Accent a Cape Cod house or cottage with classic details such as a white picket fence and cottage garden flowers like roses, larkspurs, dianthus, snapdragons and hydrangeas. Some houses lend themselves to landscaping, and cottages are at the top of the list. Don’t crowd your front yard with lots of objects or plants.

Fence or mark off an area for turf and use the rest for meadows, pasture, or woodland. An arbor or trellis planted with a climbing rose creates a welcoming entrance. Add color with baskets, a window box, flower beds, a bird bath, or other decorative touches for visual interest. Choose a mix of trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, annuals, and ground cover plants that will thrive in your site.

Details such as large front porches with overhanging beams, rafters and columns may be featured on these homes. Materials such as brick, wood, plaster, stucco and stone are commonly used as well. When it comes to lawn maintenance, it's great to start with shrubs and basic lawn care. This creates the perfect foundation to create a front yard you'll love. Your front yard is the first thing that neighbors and visitors see, and is your best opportunity to create a first impression.

3D Stair Calculator Calculate Staircase Rise and Run

design stairs

Next, trim the bottom of the stringer an amount equal to the tread thickness. Once you’ve completed cutting the first stringer, use it as a template to mark the remaining stringers. A high-contrast painted staircase becomes a striking visual accent in a hallway, basement, or foyer. Here, designer Jana Donohoe paired a rich golden yellow with deep slate blue.

Stair Calculator — Staircase Design Tool

There are a few downsides to weigh before deciding whether these are the right type of stairs for you. Depending on the size and layout of your space, half-turn stairs may be a bit complicated or impractical to install. Installation will also involve multiple support structures, which can add to the complexity and overall cost.

The Video - Glass stairs at the limit

design stairs

To build the perfect stairs for a private dwelling, use our project, as well as the building codes currently in force in your country, region or state (local building-code requirements). With the stairs calculators you can determine all important staircase dimensions — simply and quickly. Cut the risers to length using a power miter saw for speed and accuracy. Trim-head decking screws, which have tiny heads that sink below the surface. Note that I cut the risers and treads to overhang the outer stringer by 1 1/4 in.

Calculate Number of Stair Risers and Treads

Try adding them to awkward corners in your home, like the corners between a wall and fireplace molding. Now you must find the total run of the staircase, which is the horizontal distance the staircase will cover from the bottom step up to the deck. Simply multiply the number of steps by the horizontal depth of each step. The optimum depth for deck and porch steps is 10 in., which is enough space to install two 2x6 treads. In our example, the staircase has eight 10-in.-deep steps, so the total run is 80 in. Dark woodwork, swirling iron balusters, and a geometric art piece complement the imperfect lines and soft shapes in the ceramic tiles used to accent each stair riser.

She then installed a sculptural light fixture with glass details that mimic the crystal accents on the stair railing. “The translucent nature of the fixture allows you to see through to the outside, bringing the natural light and Florida foliage into the space,” the designer shares. The warm, natural wood steps and black framed glass wall are a perfect blend of form and function. The glass wall offers welcome sound reduction and reflects or allows natural light to pass through, making the interior feel more spacious. Staircases might be one of the most functional architectural features of your home.

Types of Chairs Every DIY Home Designer Should Know

After drawing all the tread-and-riser notches on the first stringer, cut the notches using a portable circular saw. After cutting up to the pencil lines the waste piece will still be attached to the stringer. Use a handsaw or jigsaw to cut through the last bit of wood to free the waste piece. Stairs must satisfy strict building codes meant to ensure safety and climbing comfort.

The landing must be level and strong enough to hold the bottom of the staircase. Some staircases, such as this one, have space for storage underneath. A row of drawers provides convenient stowaway spots for every family member. In addition, a recessed niche next to the drawers offers open storage space for larger items like bags and baskets.

The blue risers look fresh against the white treads and the variation in color is fun and playful. Add to that a rope railing, and this staircase sets the tone for the fun to be had below. The enduring decorating concept of lights and darks strikes an elegant balance with this staircase design idea. The crisp white-painted base pairs expertly with the deep brown wood treads and hand railing. If this combo suits your taste, choose a paint that promises a hard, scuff-free surface and use a durable clear finish over the wood stain.

Curved Staircases

Carriage bolts are stronger than lag screws and eliminate any chance of splitting the framing. And note that the bottom of the stringers rest on top of a bluestone slab, which provides rock-solid support, but also protects the stringers from ground moisture and water damage. Instead, pour a concrete pad, or set them on stone slabs or solid-concrete blocks. Before laying out the steps on a 2x12, decide how the stringers will join the deck.

The Replace Materials feature allows you to customize materials and finishes. Change the finish on stair treads, risers, stringers, railings, and more. Select from a wide range of wood and metal finishes or match brand-name paint colors with the custom color picker. Cantilevered steps, minimalist railings, glass balustrades, timber treads. The RoomSketcher App is an easy-to-use home design and floor plan tool that allows you to create a staircase design and see how different styles and finishes will look in your home in 3D. If remodeling or designing a staircase feels overwhelming, look to this timeless design, which features mid-tone wood treads and railings and white paint everywhere else.

Their curved design can instantly transform a space, giving it a more sophisticated appearance. These are a variation of a straight staircase, but they feature a 90-degree turn with a flat landing somewhere along the flight. The L-shaped design makes these a suitable choice for those looking to install a staircase along the wall or in a corner in order to save space. Staircases, although certainly providing a vital functional purpose, have the power to elevate an entire property. Stairs may be so much more than just a way of getting from point A to point B.

Colorful Romo wallcoverings, a petite brass sconce, a textured cushion cover, and a bright pink sign reading "Fearless" complete the space. If you have an accessible ceiling above the stairway, add a series of hanging lights, making sure they are low enough to provide enough lighting. The height between the steps and the ceiling must be 2.15 meters at minimum.

They are also difficult to design and install, meaning you’ll need to be prepared to spend a pretty penny for a curved staircase. If you’re looking to measure your stairs for carpet, you’ll want to call in a professional for a curved staircase due to the increased challenge of installation. When upgrading or building a home, critical measures such as standard stairway width, riser height, and tread depth are not left to chance. Staircase dimensions are regulated by common practice and building code, which is frequently influenced by commonly accepted norms. These guidelines are intended to make staircases as safe as possible.

This stunning spiral staircase by John Maniscalco Architecture features wood treads and a metal railing system, creating a beautiful contrast between natural and industrial materials. The open design allows light to flow through the space, highlighting the beautiful architecture. A unique design by Douglas Design Studio for a small space, this staircase features a combination of wood treads and metal risers, creating a modern industrial look. The open riser design also helps to maximize natural light throughout the space. Designing a beautiful staircase is simpler than one might think, and there are many viable DIY approaches.

There are lots of good reasons why you might want to move a set of stairs, especially if you’re gutting your home’s interior. Moving stairs can dramatically alter the look and function of your house. The vertical part of the stairs in between each tread is called the riser and it supports and connects successive treads.

In most cases, one side (the inner stringer) is attached to a wall, while the other side (the outer stringer) is on the side of the staircase open to view. However, this can vary depending on the design of the staircase and the layout of the home. In her previous home, Shannon McLaren of California’s Praire needed to redesign her floating stairs to ensure they were up to code and kid-friendly. Because she loved the airy effect of the original setup, she chose to pay homage to that design and worked thick, see-through glass spindles into the mix. McLaren finished off the staircase with a custom walnut railing and green Missoni carpeting. “Smoke glass adds drama to the staircase, which a clear glass can’t accomplish,” says Shannon Callahan, director of design at Marc-Michaels Interior Design, Inc., in Winter Park, Florida.

Yestermorrow is a leader in Design/Build education in no small part thanks to the thousands of incredible individuals who have graced our campus. And yet, by not addressing systemic barriers to attending our programs, we have missed out on the creativity and brilliance of folks who have been targeted by the systems of oppression. That is why Yestermorrow is committed to intentionally centering, honoring, and integrating the presence and knowledge of Black, Indigenous, and all People of Color, and individuals from other marginalized communities. We believe that our mission to “inspire people to create a better, more sustainable world” is not possible without the valuable perspectives, lived experiences, energy, and resilience that these communities carry.

Students in this program have the option to earn 15 credits. As a continued commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, Yestermorrow offers a 5 tier sliding scale for tuition. The sliding scale is a tool that allows students to personally assess their ability to contribute and select the price point of tuition that will allow them to access our programs.

Having some famous clients such as Patrick Whitesell and Courtney Cox isn’t the only thing that sets up this Los Angeles interior designer from the others. Trip can handle it all, whether his clients are looking for a luxury oasis on top of those Hollywood Hills in those Hollywood nights, or maybe just something a little casual for the living room. Potter Kasic also stressed her efforts to reconnect the school with the Mad River Valley community where she grew up. Among those initiatives were free tours of the Yestermorrow campus, a new lecture series and the Standby for Locals Program, which offers Vermonters 50 percent off certain classes based on availability.

It’s about creating something that reflects your values and whatever that means for you. With the dorm, our CNC furniture class will be building out the pods. The carpentry course, trim class, concrete countertops course – those classes will work on the dorm. When nobody is staying here, we’ll offer the dorm off-season to someone like Sugarbush, because they need a place for their snowmaking crews.

“It’s generating the biggest buzz,” said Sweeten contractor Trevor. These detached structures, often garages, are repurposed as guest houses, rentals, or home offices. Residing in Beverly Hills, Joan is a posh interior designer known for her remarkable work. Past clients such as Tom Brady, Gisele Bundchen, and Sylvester Stallone have given her high praise for her dedication and passion for her work.

We offer scholarships specifically for Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and Women. All short form programs have a sliding scale tuition model. When we are able, we offer scholarships for specific short form courses via grants.

The course descriptions below are intended to help students, faculty, and registrars translate the program into discrete course credits at their home institutions. We are committed to re-orienting this organization towards greater safety, equity, and opportunity for historically harmed, mistreated, and excluded groups including BIPOC, LGBTQIA2S+, people with disabilities, and women. We also know that this commitment requires more than putting well-intentioned words on our website. LA kitchens tend to be large, mostly open plan, and gourmet with top-of-the-line professional appliances. But there’s not as much carving, ornate moldings, over-the-top use of stones.

At the same time, the goal is more making it your own with custom looks—tile backsplashes, bold color ranges, and stove hoods. Sweeten brings homeowners an exceptional renovation experience by personally matching trusted general contractors to your project, while offering expert guidance and support—at no cost to you. Demitri loves to bring a modern approach to interiors, working globally with clients from anywhere, especially an eclectic approach. While his partner is a Golden Globe-winning director, this doesn’t get in the way of the work and Demitri’s name himself. He has collaborated with some of the biggest stars out there, from Paul McCartney, Cher, and Tina Turner, so it’s no wonder why so many big-name clients are lined up to taste the creativity that Demitri serves.

With this understanding, it is necessary to create spaces where oppressive societal structures are minimized and the people in the new space can focus on their goals instead of filtering out the noise of certain “isms”. Combining design and building offers numerous advantages and promotes the creation of intentional and inspired buildings and communities that enhance our world. From the professional design/builder to the do-it-yourself design/build homeowner, every designer should know how to build and every builder should know how to design. This philosophy sets Yestermorrow apart from other educational institutions. Yestermorrow Design/Build School teaches hands-on courses in design, construction, woodworking, and architectural craft.

A lot are pushed outside of the setback, so they go high vertically. It’s getting a lot of value on the price for square foot.” If you’re planning on expanding or remodeling a kitchen or bathroom (more on them below), look for a vetted general contractor that is licensed. A general contractor in LA with experience will guide you through the process.
